NextStep DV Shelter Doubles Capacity to Care for Pets
Washington County, Maine (June 28 - July 1, 2021) - Did you know that up to 48 percent of domestic violence victims delay leaving their abusers because they fear what would happen to their pets? Pets are often used as a tool to manipulate domestic violence victims to stay in the home.
RedRover + Purina’s Purple Leash Project and Greater Good Charities are working to change that. Together they are providing $54,000 in grants to enable NextStep Domestic Violence Project to double their capacity to house survivors’ pets onsite. Currently, only about 15% of domestic violence shelters nationwide allow pets. The Purple Leash Project has a goal of ensuring 25% of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. are pet-friendly by 2025.
RedRover is thrilled to welcome back RedRover Responders volunteers on this project. They will join Rescue Rebuild, a program of Greater Good Charities, to help expand and transform pet-friendly space at the shelter. Rescue Rebuild are experts in repairing and renovating domestic violence shelters and animal shelters in need across the nation.

RedRover believes that pets are family, and we know how the special bond with our pets can help in the healing process that follows once leaving an abuser.”
Over five days, the combined team will install privacy fencing for a dog play yard, which will include seating and a waste station, pour a new sidewalk and ramp to ensure ADA accessibility, install pet-friendly flooring and base molding, create cat enrichment projects such as cat bridges and cat shelving, add kitty cots, and provide in-room and take-home dog crates. Additionally, the grants will cover pet supplies such as bowls, collars, beds, leashes, and toys, as well as pet supplies for survivors to take with them once they leave the shelter.

According to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, a domestic violence assault is reported to Maine law enforcement every two hours and five minutes, and in 2017 these assaults comprised more than 40% of the total assaults reported.
NextStep’s Associate Director, Kelly Brown, said, “This funding is going to help families have a smoother transition into the shelter because they can be with their pets. We have witnessed this with the current families we have been able to assist with their pets. It will give pet owners a sense of relief that they have never had before because they won't have to worry about where their pet will go and if they might be abused.”
